Our Mission

The Institute of Geosciences at RUB aims to understand the geological processes that shape and concentrate Earth’s resources – from the crust to the mantle and across all spatial and temporal scales – and to translate this knowledge into sustainable and responsible approaches for exploring and using mineral, energy, and groundwater resources to benefit society.

Our Vision

To achieve this, we pursue the following strategic goals:

• build on the diverse scientific expertise at the Institute of Geosciences and further strengthen our interdisciplinary and collaborative research environment.
• focus our research and teaching on fluid-rock interactions, integrating chemical and mechanical processes to advance our understanding of resource formation, geohazards, and subsurface processes and to develop sustainable solutions.
• strengthen the Rhine-Ruhr region’s potential to become a leading center for geothermal energy development by leveraging existing mining and energy infrastructure and expanding collaboration with the Fraunhofer Research Institution for Energy Infrastructures and Geothermal Systems (IEG).
