Field Exercise in the Franconian Alb

How can rocks and geological processes be studied directly in the field? As part of the elective module on geology, students expanded their knowledge during a field trip to the Franconian Alb.

In addition to rock identification, the program included creating geological sketches and mapping geological profiles. Furthermore, the students gained insights into the geological history of Central Europe—from the formation of the Tethys Ocean during the Mesozoic Era, through significant fossil deposits, to caves as climate archives and current research projects. The importance of sedimentary rocks as raw materials was also discussed.

The field exercise built on the content covered in the lecture and lab and enabled students to explore geological relationships firsthand in the field.
