Guided Tour of the Klosterbusch Quarry

As part of the “Langen Tags der StadtNatur” the Klosterbusch quarry opened its otherwise inaccessible gates to interested visitors.

During the tour, led by Dr. Marco Roth, participants gained fascinating insights into the geological history of the region. The Klosterbusch quarry is considered the largest geological exposure in Bochum and offers a direct view into millions of years of Earth’s history. In addition to the region’s geological development, the mining history of the former Klosterbusch colliery was also clearly explained.

A particular highlight of the excursion was the visit to the seismic monitoring station in the so-called “Eulenstollen.” Behind the locked entrance door of the former tunnel, the Institute of Geosciences at Ruhr University Bochum operates a modern monitoring station for recording seismic activity. For the visitors, this provided a rare glimpse into current geophysical research on site.

The event was organized by the Environmental and Green Spaces Office of the City of Bochum in cooperation with GeoPark Ruhrgebiet e.V. and Ruhr University Bochum.
