Congratulations to Prof. Fidel Costa, winner of the 2025 Bowen Award
The Institute of Geosciences is happy to share some special news about one of our former colleagues: Prof. Dr. Fidel Costa has been honoured with the 2025 Bowen Award by the American Geophysical Union (AGU). This prestigious award recognises outstanding contributions in the fields of volcanology, petrology and geochemistry.
Prof. Fidel Costa spent around four years in Bochum, where he carried out some of his defining work. Beyond that, there are further close connections: several of his doctoral students conducted research in Bochum for extended periods and published joint papers with our institute.
Today, Prof. Costa works at the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (IPGP).
His research examines the processes that lead to volcanic eruptions and their impact on society and the environment. He combines fieldwork with laboratory analyses, experimental and numerical modelling, and large geological and geochemical data sets to identify global processes and trends in volcanology.
The Bowen Award ceremony will take place during AGU25 from 15 to 19 December 2025 in New Orleans and online.
We warmly congratulate Prof. Costa on this special award and are proud that part of his scientific career was shaped in Bochum.
