Working group Geomorphology and Geohazards
The working group Geomorphology and Geohazards focuses on the evolution of Earth's surface during the Quaternary (i.e., the last ~2.6 million years). The group's goal is to better understand the interplay between transport, weathering, and erosion processes, as well as their climatic and tectonic drivers in sediment and landscape systems, in order to make their future development more predictable.
We use a combination of field, laboratory, and numerical methods and follow an interdisciplinary approach to better understand the development of our landscapes. Our understanding of landscape changes and the underlying processes is highly dependent on a robust chronology. For this reason, one of the methodological focuses of the working group is the application and development of geo- and thermochronological techniques, particularly electron spin resonance (ESR) and luminescence dating methods. These techniques provide important insights into the timing and pace of landscape developments as well as associated geohazards.
